how different is a 17t cog from an 18t cog?
I just got a new rear wheel and am wondering whether to keep my 18t cog or look into a cog with a different tooth count. I'm mostly curious in knowing how different it'll feel to ride say a 16t or 17t cog, compared to my current cog. Would that increase my speed? Does it make it more or less difficult to pedal uphill? There are some parts of my commute where I'm pedaling fast but not really gaining ground/speed, it's like I might as well stop pedaling to spare myself some energy and let gravity/momentum do the work - what sort of an effect would a 17t cog have in this case?
any other comparisons between different cog sizes is appreciated!
things to note:
I ride a single-speed road bike, freewheel not fixie, with 700c wheels and a 42t chainring
It's all about ratio from the sprocket up front and the cog on your rear but since your focusing on the rear. If you go lower on teeth like if you go to a 16t, you'll get more speed but pedaling will become a bit harder when going uphill. Lesser the tooth, the harder to pedal but more speed. You probably won't see a big change on the effort you have to put to pedal if you go 2 tooth lower.
I saw i change when I went from 18T to 11T but 2T lower for you should be a good upgrade.
