Used High-end road bike or new entry-level bike?
I guess this is more of a what-is-your-opinion post than anything.
So... A good buddy of mine recently got me interested in bike racing, and since I don't know much about road bikes, he's offered to sell me his '05 or '06 Bianchi 928 Carbon L with Full SRam Force components for $1200.
Would you say that, for the price, this bike is a steal or would I be better off buying a '10 model?
Your two cents are greatly appreciated.
The most important thing to consider when purchasing a road bike, especially your first, is fit. The bike needs to fit you and the style of riding you want to do. The frame size, geometry, stem, headset spacers and seat height all contribute to your overall experience. If the bike doesn't fit right you are going to hate riding it and more than likely not ride it. Any money spent on something you don't want to ride is money wasted. I'm 5'9" with a 30 inch inseam and had 3 different shops give me 3 different size/spec recommendations.
If you have never owned a road bike the component spec should really be secondary in your decision making. You definitely want to consider it, but your primary concern should be the fit and feel of the bike. Test ride a bunch of bikes and see what feels good to you. You can always upgrade the components later as your riding skills improve.
All of that being said, carbon frame technology has improved leaps and bounds each year over the last 5-6 years. Along the way they have become lighter, stiffer and more affordable. If it were my decision I would go with a new bike and have it fitted to me. You can't go wrong with SRAM components, I have the Rival group and love it. I'm not sure what your final budget is, but IMHO you should be able to get a new, full carbon bike with the SRAM Rival group for $2K or less. And now is a great time to get a closeout 09.
