Negative Calories in Weight Loss
A negative calorie food is a food that requires more energy (i.e. calories) to be digested than it provides. That is, its thermic effect is greater than its calorie content.
What is thermic effect when used in dieting?
The thermic effect is the cost of processing food for storage and use to maintain bodily functions.
Dietary fat is very easy to process and has very little thermic effect, while protein is hard to process and has a much larger thermic effect. This means the body does not use alot of energy to process the fat, but the body will use huges amount of energy to digest proteins. Which will cause the negative calorie effect!
Celery and most melons have negative caloric balance (requiring they take more energy to digest than usable energy received from the food), presumably because the thermic effect is greater than the caloric content, due to the high fiber matrix that must be unraveled to access their carbohydrates.
Have you heard of the grapefruit diet?
The consumption of grapefruit, another common and readily available negative calorie diet food, leads to weight-loss simply by taking up space in the stomach that might otherwise go to higher calorie foods.
The grapefruit diet has much improved and now you can eat a wide variety of foods that produce the same effect.
Science has made progress in learning how the body digest certain foods and can now pin point the negative calorie foods. This type of dieting for weight loss has become very popular due to the ability of the dieter to eat and be satisfied and still lose weight.
