plug fouling problem?? please help?
my 2006 yz125 recently began fouling plugs right after start up. i think it may be related to the choke? the temp here has been in the low 50's high 40's. i use premium gas mixed with torco 2 cycle oil at about 38:1 or 40:1 maybe the gas went bad?
what happened, i went to start the bike, i put the choke on all the way started the bike took the choke off and was letting the bike warm up. i went to rev the motor and it fell on its face and then acted like it was out of fuel. would not start again. took out the plug and it was way fuel soaked. put in another plug and same problem. eventualy i got it to start without the choke and sometimes if would rev and pull good and sometimes out of no where it would act like it was plugged up or something. the only thing i have done is tried to increase the idle from the jam nuts at the top of carburetor, is that right way to raise idle? or should that be done at the handlebars? thanks for the help!
merely sounds like you wet fouled the plug originally and didn't clear the excess fuel from the cylinder prior to installing the new plug... at least that the original problem I see... the on going issue sounds more like either bad / trash in fuel or starting to get a little low on compression...
as for adjusting the idle, I looked at the diagram in bikebandit about the stock carb and do not see the typical idle adjustment screw ... but surely there has to be some type of idle adjustment over having to adjust the cable ends with jam nuts???
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-motorcycle-yz125v-yz125-2006/o/m8845 and look at various diagrams including carb & handle controls...
anyway, when you foul a plug for what ever reason, upon removing the old plug and prior to installing the new plug, it's a good idea to kick the bike thru 8-10 times without touching the throttle and the choke off to clean out any unburned fuel in the cylinder. ... then put in a new plug that is properly gapped...
to check for trash in the fuel, merely set the bike up straight (preferrably on a center stand or crate), turn off the fuel petcock on the bottom of the tank and loosen the plug on the bottom of the float bowl on the bottom of the carb. try not to spill the contents and look closely at what is in that plug. could be water or trash ... if water, I recommend you go ahead and drain the tank and replace with fresh premixed fuel... if trash, same thing but I would also recommend pulling the carb off and taking it apart and thoroughly cleaning it as some of the trash might be stuck in some of the jets...
once all that is done, it should run fine ... but if still having issues, run a compression check and if below about 125 psi, time to replace at least the ring ... but check cylinder walls & piston for scoring or damage, might require a full top end kit (piston, ring, wrist pin, wrist pin bearing & circlips)...
hope that helped...
