How much to build a fixed gear track bike?
I am looking to build my own fixed gear track bike and was wondering what the cheapest possible build could cost. I want a light frame. i plan on spray painting the bike so it doesnt matter if the frame would be used. I'd like to have a nice pedal/chain assembly, nice handlebars and id like to have lightweight 5 spoke weels with nice tires. I wouldnt want brakes so that doesnt need to be included in the price. The rest of the parts could be used. Basically I'd be looking for mostly used parts that are in good condition. Anybody that would know a vague ballpark at how much a project like that would cost would be a great help. Thanks a bunch.
Also, if anyone could tell me every part i would need that would really help so i can look around and see how much I'm looking at. I have nothing right now so i need to know EVERYTHING i need. Thanks again!
Hey Nick,
Definitely consider building your own fixed gear bike - you'll learn a lot, it's rewarding, and some would even argue that riding on a fixed gear bike can make you a smoother, stronger cyclist. One thing that I read when I first got into fixed-gear bikes was Sheldon Brown's article, ‘Fixed Gear for the Road’: http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html
Now, it's tough to say how much the bike would cost you, because like other things, you can buy very high-quality parts and pay a lot, or you can get parts that are still good for much less. If you plan to spray paint the frame, I doubt you need $160 Phil Wood hubs in each wheel. Anyway, I bet you could build it for $500, or even less if you look for deals and don't obsess about getting the most expensive parts (it can become an addiction).
It's an ongoing argument about where to find a good frame for cheap. First, you should try to look into an approximate size frame that you want, then you can look on Craigslist for your area, eBay, and there are a few sites where you can get frames for decent prices, such as http://bikeisland.com/ - but used frame would probably be your best bet, which you can find easily if you convert a regular road frame to a fixed-gear setup. Go to the bikeforums.net link that I give below, and there are a lot of threads about finding good, cheap frames.
Lightweight 5-spoke wheels, like the Aerospoke, are tough to come by and verrrry expensive - $400 or more each - but they're beautiful! Once you get to know bikes a little bit better, you'll start to see that regular, 'spoked' wheels can also look very attractive, and can be equally strong and light. Velocity Deep V rims are popular among fixed-gear riders.
One idea is to buy an entire fixed-gear bike from a site such as http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/trackbikes.htm and use that bike as a starting point - you'll have a full bike, including the frame, for under $500 and as parts break you can upgrade them, or upgrade them from the beginning.
About the brakes: many, if not most, experienced fixed-gear bikers think that it's a bad idea to not have at least one brake on the bike (on the front). The reason: if you don't have a brake, you tend to bike more slowly in traffic because you don't want to go too fast in case you have to stop abruptly, which is very difficult without a brake. You'd still have a legit & cool fixed gear with one brake on the front, and you can still stop with you legs. Which you will.
Quick, possibly incomplete parts list: frame, fork, headset (these 3 often come together), stem, handlebars, seat post, saddle (seat), wheels (rims, spokes, hubs), tires, rear cog, crankset, bottom bracket (connects crankset to frame and allows it to turn), chain, pedals, and for brakes you'll need a brake level, a brake, and a brake cable/housing.
Anyway, good luck – I recommend that you look at some of the bikes on velospace and fixed-gear gallery (see my source list), and read all about fixed-gear bikes and conversion’s on Sheldon Brown’s website: http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed/index.html - and lastly, there are many good discussions on the fixed-gear/singlespeed section of bikeforums.net - http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=178
