Can a Campagnolo Mirage (52/42/30) crankset (marked 9 speed) be used with Veloce 10 speed brake/shifter?
I am building my first road bike. I already have a frame (08 aluminum Motobecane Fanton Cross) and a Compagnono Mirage *52/42/30" crankset. I am ready to buy the brake/shifter set and a cassette. The price difference between the Compy Mirage (9 speed) and Veloce (10 speed) brake/shifter set is minimal. Which one should I choose? This will also lead to the matching cassette to go with the brake/shifter.
The Mirage crankset was marked "9 speed exa drive", and I try to use it with a 10 speed Veloce cassette with matching Quick Shift Rear Derailleur.
Well there really is no "9 speed crank set" so to say. You are running a triple in the front which means you need front derailleur for triple crankset. The rear is where it has to be exact. You need 9 speed shifters for 9 speed cassette and the same for 10 speed, derailleurs included. You want it to be right especially for Campy. It works very well when you have the right shifters, derailleurs, and cassette for the right speed group.
And for the record.....Campagnolo is way better than Shimano. Who do you think invented the first derailleur?
I will say this. If you are worried about maintenence, say if something breaks while out riding, you can find parts that are more compatible with Shimano than Campy. You can fix Campy parts but it's a little time consuming and meticulous but well worth it when they are running smooth.
