Which bike should I buy for light mountain biking?
My final choices are between the kona blast, kona fire mountain deluxe, or norco bushpilot (all 09 versions)
I know that the basic kona is the lan'ai, then the fire mountain, and then the blast is the next up, but is the blast as good as the deluxe?
The FM deluxe has 9 gears as opposed to the blast having eight but I'm not sure about the rest of the specs, they have the same forks and brakes anyway...
I know that the norco is the worst by quite a bit, but it would be £60-70 cheaper and I'm considering it as I'm not sure I really need something as good as the konas. The bushpilot is susupposedo be really decent but is only held back by the forks (100mm suntour XCM-V2 w/preload adjust) and the forks im used to have about 5mm travel and the bike itself is 18Kg, so the norco will be a massive improvement.

All three only have front suspension? That was going to be my first comment - for light biking and in general you don't need a rear suspension - great for downhill racing but pottering along a bridle way? the speed doesn't need full suspension and this leads me to my next point....
Go to a shop selling all three and pick them up - I would go for the lightest frame and this is where you pay the extra money of curse. A frame is harder to upgrade, than say a brake so that's the base thing I would go for. However depending on your budget and where you might ride, this can be overlooked a bit.
They are all the same make so should use the same family of parts, say, all using shimano gear systems etc. Again increases in price increases the quality of the bolt on parts. If the forks and brakes are the same the only other part that makes a big difference is the gear train. If it's Kona - who are a decent brand, then the gears for al 3 will be a decent quality.
Gears - 8 or 9 gears? Won't make a huge difference to be honest. My first mountain bike had 15 (3 at the front, 5 at the back) - you are considering 24 to 27 in total - I managed to get round all the light trails I needed to - and still there are maybe only 10 gears that I actually use. Don't worry about that
Front forks all the same? If not you can go for whichever and upgrade later if you think you need them (easy job, undo a couple of nuts, take one off, put one on - maybe free at the shop where you buy new forks from). 100mm travel is quite a lot - you have to hit something pretty big to compress that all the way
That's the differences between the 3 - weight, and bolt on parts.and gears.
Look at your budget and see which you can afford - and want to afford. I get the feeling you are wanting us to say "Don't get the Blast" to justify spending a bit more, but I would say buy what your heart tells you to buy. The last 2 bikes I have bought I made my mind up after 5 minutes of looking - checked the bikes with the right specs and then listened to what I would be happy to ride - so listen to your heart of which one to get.
(ps. cheaper one.... and you can get say a pair of oakleys, a camel back, better accessories (shoes etc with what you haven't spent - even a train ticket or 2 to get out to the hills if you need!)
